Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

As an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) you are at the centre of aviation, maintaining and servicing aircraft. It’s a position absolutely crucial to the industry, no aircraft can take off without being checked by an engineer. Maintenance engineers enjoy the challenge of discovering and fixing physical problems with aircraft. There is always something new to learn with so many different aircraft. You can specialise in a variety of areas; Avionics, Aircraft Engines and Components, Structural Integrity, Electrical Systems, Flight Management, Navigation Systems or Communications Systems. You work under the supervision of a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME).

Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

A LAME is responsible for signing-off all maintenance completed to make aircraft airworthy, LAMEs need to demonstrate competent technical skills and also have a good understanding of aviation rules, regulations and legislation. A LAMEs main role is supervising AME’s and signing off on aircraft maintenance. The more qualifications and variety of engine/system/aircraft licences you have, the better your employment and career opportunities. Australia’s aircraft engineer trade qualifications conform to international standards, so it’s a career you can travel with.

To become a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in Australia you must be over 21 years of age and have at least four years experience in aircraft maintenance or aircraft component maintenance. You must also have at least 2 years experience in the category the licence is for. The best place to get that experience is through employment with an airline, the Defence Force or in General Aviation.

Avionics Engineer

Entry Requirements: Aerospace Engineer (Avionics) Bachelor or higher
Experience Required: Entry level positions available

You are technically minded, love a challenging work environment and are passionate about sophisticated technology. Avionics engineers work in aircraft maintenance or in the aerospace industry. Avionics engineers design, program, test and calibrate electrical systems, instrumentation and computers for communication, navigation and guidance systems on board spacecraft, aircraft and satellites.

It’s recommended that aspiring avionics engineers earn a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Electrical Engineering. Although a degree is not a requirement it will further your career prospects.

Aerospace Engineer

Electrical and electronic engineer

All components of aviation touch electrical engineering in some way. So if you are part of an electronic and electrical engineering team, you’ll be at the heart of aviation, it’s very rewarding.

Aerospace Structural and Mechanical Engineer
