Engineering & Maintenance

CAREERS INCLUDE AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE, AEROSPACE, ELECTRICAL & STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING and more...

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

  • Entry Requirements: Year 10
  • Experience Required: No previous experience for entry

Do you like knowing how things work, enjoy finding practical solutions to problems and love being exposed to cutting edge technology? Are you looking for a satisfying career to potentially take you all over the world?  This is a career that evolves with experience, you could go from an experienced aircraft maintenance engineer to design engineer then project manager.

As an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) you are at the centre of aviation, maintaining and servicing aircraft. It’s a position absolutely crucial to the industry, no aircraft can take off without being checked by an engineer. Maintenance engineers enjoy the challenge of discovering and fixing physical problems with aircraft. There is always something new to learn with so many different aircraft. You can specialise in a variety of areas; Avionics, Aircraft Engines and Components, Structural Integrity, Electrical Systems, Flight Management, Navigation Systems or Communications Systems. You work under the supervision of a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME).

Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

  • Entry Requirements: Year 10
  • Experience Required: No previous experience for entry

A LAME is responsible for signing-off all maintenance completed to make aircraft airworthy, LAMEs need to demonstrate competent technical skills and also have a good understanding of aviation rules, regulations and legislation. A LAMEs main role is supervising AME’s and signing off on aircraft maintenance. The more qualifications and variety of engine/system/aircraft licences you have, the better your employment and career opportunities. Australia’s aircraft engineer trade qualifications conform to international standards, so it’s a career you can travel with.

To become a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in Australia you must be over 21 years of age and have at least four years experience in aircraft maintenance or aircraft component maintenance. You must also have at least 2 years experience in the category the licence is for. The best place to get that experience is through employment with an airline, the Defence Force or in General Aviation.

Avionics Engineer

  • Entry Requirements: Aerospace Engineer (Avionics) Bachelor or higher
  • Experience Required: Entry level positions available

You are technically minded, love a challenging work environment and are passionate about sophisticated technology.  Avionics engineers work in aircraft maintenance or in the aerospace industry.   Avionics engineers design, program, test and calibrate electrical systems, instrumentation and computers for  communication, navigation and guidance systems on board spacecraft, aircraft and satellites.

It’s recommended that aspiring avionics engineers earn a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as Aeronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Electrical Engineering.  Although a degree is not a requirement it will further your career prospects.

Aerospace Engineer

  • Entry Requirements: Degree - Engineering of anytime, Aerospace and advantage
  • Experience Required: Entry level positions available

You are passionate about technology, innovation and creating flight vehicles. You work well under pressure and as part of a team. As an Aerospace engineer you design, develop, manufacture and maintain all types of flight vehicles including military and civilian aeroplanes, helicopters, missiles, launch vehicles, spacecraft, satellites, and control and guidance systems. You will be surrounded by people that are so passionate about their work it will inspire you to discover more.  This is an exciting career as ideas and dreams of the past are now coming to life with the latest technology.

Electrical and electronic engineer

  • Entry Requirements: Engineering Degree (Aerospace, Avionics, Electrical Systems)
  • Experience Required: Entry level positions available

You are an independent thinker, a team player, technically minded and passionate about electronics. Electrical engineers have a variety of jobs they can be involved in from concept development and design to strategy and improvement processes for systems integration. The work also involves hands on aircraft repairs and modifications. You might work independently but you’re part of an experienced and highly dedicated team of engineers. Electronics are not just on aircraft, they include unmanned aircraft, space aircraft, battery plant management, propulsions, power generation, ventilation and more. All components of aviation touch electrical engineering in some way. So if you are part of an electronic and electrical engineering team, you’ll be at the heart of aviation, it’s very rewarding.

Aerospace Structural and Mechanical Engineer

  • Entry Requirements: Degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • Experience Required: Entry level positions available

You love cutting edge technology, are technically minded and passionate about Aerospace. Mechanical and structural engineering teams design, develop and test aircraft, spacecraft and missile structures. They work with innovative technologies that are shaping the future of aerospace, creating new designs and materials and improving methods and processes. This expertise supports teams from product conception to market, working at the forefront of aerospace innovation.

Mechanical and structural engineers use computer-aided design, mathematical models and other computer software to formulate, analyse, and modify aircraft, space craft or missile structures. This is a great career, you get to create a design and then you get to test it and make it come to life.

Aviation Production Engineering

  • Entry Requirements: Degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field
  • Experience Required: Entry level positions available

Are you efficient and enjoy challenging yourself to find new ways to do things? As an aviation production engineer, you manage the efficiency and production of parts, products and systems used in aviation structures.

Production engineers utilise their skills, knowledge and experience to ensure all products are manufactured and delivered with efficiency and quality.  Production engineers work alongside others on the floor at the heart of the operation to support and guide them from aircraft design through production, to delivery and beyond.
